We once again this year attended the Milan International Furniture Fair, now in its 50th edition. Italy, recognised worldwide as the home of design and modernity, is the perfect showcase for household furniture, and although this year we did not find the new trends seen in previous editions, the distinctive touches which always make the Milan event so appealing were still there.

Below we set out some of the key features which we came across:

• We expected to see a little less wood this year (whether natural veneer or imitation), but combinations of walnut or oak with a white, grey or sand-coloured lacquer finish are still very much in evidence.

• In terms of lacquer, there was a clear predominance of matt over gloss finishes, with the latter being replaced on occasion with glass.

• As for tones, it would be fair to say that the "base" colour remains white, while greys and browns are also coming to the fore. One novel aspect, the continuation of a trend already hinted at last year, came in the form of blue, turquoise and mauve tones, either as the sole colour for individual pieces or as a complement in modular compositions.

• In terms of compositional formation, one  feature which proved fairly popular this time around was the bookshelf with integrated TV, rather than the traditional modular arrangement. Mention should also be made of the inclusion of desks in the living room.

• As for bedrooms, the trends in terms of lacquers and colours are the same as for living rooms, with upholstered beds now being very much the norm, although as we know in Italy they have always had their place.

• In upholstery, Italian design of course remains dominated by low-backed, heavily designed sofas. The most commonly used fabrics were of the linen type in light and brown tones, along with the bluish hues referred to earlier in furniture.

• As for leather, the quality of Italian leather products was outstanding, in light, sand and grey tones.

• We began conversations with the manufacturer POLO DIVANI, which already works with a number of groups in the country manufacturing a product delivering excellent value for money, and employing on all its models a pocket sprung seat offering excellent comfort.

• The furniture for kids and youngsters reveals the same rainbow of colour and imagination as every year. The intended aim is a more extrovert image, without overlooking the functionality which this type of furniture always requires.

• Bimax: Our supplier presented the following new features:
• Nikki Collection: The lids of the low units slide on runners for greater ease of access and wiring. These modules have a false bottom to conceal the cables. This collection features the new Marron Glacé chestnut colour along with an ash veneer for the entire structure, whereas this was previously possible only for the facade, along with improvements to the whole metal frame.  New Athos model table with aluminium legs and steel crosspiece: 163x90 (ext. 216) lacquered. • New BARCODE collection, bedroom and accessories upholstered in Stretchy 3D fabric formed using a heat-sealing process.

• Restyling of the Strip bedroom, in lacquered ash veneer or walnut with the headboard upholstered in eco-leather.

• Amadeus bed, upholstered and with a metal base covered in eco-leather.
